Cancer Research: Information from a Patient / Caregiver Perspective |

| Who We AreResearch with Respect is a program supported by “Bear Ring “U” ‘n Mind”, a national charitable foundation. We are dedicated to assisting volunteers to anticipate the problems that can occur when they join a Phase 1 Clinical Trial - Oncology. Further, we will help the volunteer and their loved ones deal with the terror that can ensue when researchers are not responsive to patient concerns. *Research with Respect* seeks to improve the monitoring and care given to Phase 1 cancer patients. Where We StandResearch with Respect fully supports Phase 1 Clinical Trials - Oncology... when they are conducted with a concerted focus on the well-being of the cancer patient volunteer. Until that is the norm for every Phase 1 cancer study initiated, our foundation will actively defend your right; the internationally mandated right of people who volunteer to participate in experiments conducted on live human beings... • To accurate physical monitoring and data reporting • To optimal care, and... • To real patient safety Research done on live human beings has been a concern for decades. The Nuremberg Code of 1947 began the attempt to regulate the industry. That was followed by the Declaration of Helsinki, 1974, and many other international and national medical forums recognizing the right of competent care for those people who allow new treatments to be tried out on their bodies. Currently, the World Health Organization has directed that all countries must establish a Public Registry of Clinical Trials. This would insure that all Trials, including Phase 1, are fully documented and their results fully published. Canada has not yet complied as of September, 2007. Movies such as “The Constant Gardener” and “Wit” have addressed the problem of medical research losing sight of the humanity of their test subjects. *Bear Ring “U” ‘n Mind* is a national charitable foundation whose main program is *Research with Respect* - bringing practical assistance to Phase 1 cancer patients. *Bear Ring "U" 'n Mind* is funded by private Canadian citizens, who have "been there" with a loved one. There is no connection to pharmaceutical or research companies. Our Goals• To inform the public of the noble contributions made to society by Phase 1 oncology clinical trial volunteers • To improve the monitoring of Phase 1 oncology clinical trial subjects • To provide free/independent "head-to-toe" physical examinations by qualified nurses as required by Phase 1 oncology clinical trial patients. • To promote the goal of providing compassionate end-of-life care to Phase 1 oncology clinical trial members We do not pretend to be medical experts. But having had close affiliation with the Phase 1 process, we know it can be conducted in a more humane manner. Our Steering CommitteeOur steering committee is small but represents a cross-section of society - 3 retired nurses – specialties: oncology, quality control and operating theatre; a social worker; a retired farmer; an IT guy and a stay-at-home Mom. Our SupportersWe have been kindly supported by the talents of a graphic artist; a family lawyer; a website master; a retired editor; a Nurse Practitioner…and many other people, who once they understand just who the Phase 1 person is, they add them to their consciousness. | |
